Northern Ireland’s gas network operator, formerly known as Firmus Energy Networks, has rebranded as Kinecx Energy, unveiling a new identity and strategy aimed at accelerating the region’s transition to a low-carbon future. The announcement was made at the company’s annual stakeholder briefing in Ballymena, attended by industry leaders, academics, and policy experts to discuss net-zero pathways.

The rebrand follows the 2024 sale of Kinecx’s retail arm, marking its shift to operating exclusively as a networks business. Chief Executive Niall Martindale explained that the new name reflects “a refreshed purpose and ambition for a lower-carbon future,” while retaining the company’s core values and focus on customer service.

Kinecx Energy employs approximately 65 staff at its Antrim headquarters and has invested around £250 million (€293 million) in gas infrastructure. Its network serves 200,000 properties across Northern Ireland, with 75,000 already connected. The company aims to extend connections to the remaining off-grid properties and expand biomethane integration to reduce reliance on natural gas. Converting homes from heating oil to gas can cut carbon emissions by up to 50 per cent.

In May 2025, Kinecx signed its first biomethane connection agreement with Greenan Generation Ltd in Eglinton, County Londonderry. The facility is expected to supply roughly 8 per cent of regional gas demand, becoming the first direct biomethane injection point on Kinecx’s network—a key milestone for renewable gas in Northern Ireland.

Looking ahead, the company’s GD29 business plan, due in 2027, will outline proposals for network modernisation and decarbonisation, positioning Kinecx Energy as a leader in sustainable energy transition in the region.
