Ireland unlocks private wires to accelerate clean energy connections

The Irish government has approved a major policy shift allowing renewable energy generators to connect directly with electricity users through privately owned power lines. The new ‘private wires’ framework enables wind and solar farms to supply energy straight to factories, data centres, battery operators, and even neighbouring businesses—without routing through the national grid.

Announced by Climate Minister Darragh O’Brien, the reform is designed to fast-track grid development, attract private capital, and support decarbonisation at speed. The move also opens doors for innovation in EV charging and local energy sharing models.

Legislation to amend the Electricity Regulation Act is expected this autumn, with Ireland’s utilities regulator set to gain new oversight powers. The policy aligns with broader plans to mobilise private investment for green infrastructure and reduce pressure on the national grid.

Explore how this policy could reshape Ireland’s energy market.
