German engineering firm WELTEC BIOPOWER is set to deliver Ireland’s largest biomethane facility for Evergreen Agricultural Enterprises in Monasterevin, County Kildare, with operations scheduled to begin mid-2026. The €50 million project will process 165,000 tonnes of residues and by-products from the Irish beer and whiskey industries each year, ensuring materials unsuitable for animal feed are put to productive use.
Strategically located with excellent access to the M7 motorway and just 20 metres from the national gas network, the plant will enable direct biomethane injection into the grid. Its infrastructure includes four primary digesters, a 4,900-cubic-metre stainless-steel secondary digester, and three storage tanks for liquid substrates.
The facility incorporates a combined heat and power system producing around 1 megawatt of electricity to power operations and maintain optimal temperatures for digestion. Biogas collected in digesters with double-membrane roofs will be processed into biomethane through advanced membrane technology. Output is expected to reach 1,300 standard cubic metres per hour, equivalent to approximately 110 GWh annually.
Circular economy principles are central to the project. Digestate output of 65,000 tonnes per year will be stored in a covered concrete lagoon and returned to local farmland as liquid and solid fractions, closing nutrient loops and supporting sustainable agriculture.
Patrick Meade, Managing Director of Evergreen, emphasised WELTEC BIOPOWER’s technical expertise and efficient delivery as key factors in the plant’s development. The facility will not only advance Ireland’s renewable energy capacity but also demonstrate how industrial by-products can be transformed into clean energy and valuable agricultural inputs.
With a focus on operational efficiency, sustainable energy production, and community impact, the Monasterevin plant positions Ireland at the forefront of biomethane innovation.
See how WELTEC BIOPOWER is reshaping renewable energy in Ireland and setting new standards for industrial biomethane production.
