HDI Global has named John Morrell as head of energy and power underwriting for its Middle East operations, effective 1 December 2025. Based in Dubai, Morrell will lead the team responsible for underwriting risks across both conventional and renewable energy sectors, including operational and construction exposures.
The appointment aligns with HDI Global’s strategy to expand its cross-divisional energy and power unit in the Middle East, a region considered strategic for the company’s global energy portfolio. Morrell brings over 14 years of experience in renewable energy and construction, with prior leadership roles in the Asia-Pacific market.
Joining him is Shumaila Shakeel, who started on 3 November as a power underwriter. Together, the team will deliver HDI Global’s insurance solutions, including International Programmes, Captives, and Alternative Risk Transfer, tailored for clients across the Middle East energy sector.
Franz Adamczyk, global head of energy and power underwriting, highlighted the value of HDI’s integrated approach, which combines close client dialogue and fast service through a single, cross-divisional energy and power unit. Morrell commented that the Middle East office will strengthen local presence while providing strategic insights and bespoke support to clients and brokers in the region.
HDI Global opened its Dubai office 16 months ago to develop new client relationships, while its Singapore office continues to serve existing international clients, particularly those with downstream energy assets. Willem van Wyk, managing director of HDI Global Dubai, emphasised that the new leadership lineup will drive profitable growth in the dynamic Middle Eastern energy market.
