European EPC firm Greencells Group has been appointed by Ireland’s state-owned Electricity Supply Board (ESB) to deliver a 44MW extension of the Drombeg Solar Park in County Kerry. The project, Drombeg Phase 2, builds on the existing 50MW solar plant and is planned for commissioning in autumn 2025.
The first phase of Drombeg Solar Park received planning approval in May 2019 and secured a contract through the second Irish Renewable Energy Support Scheme (RESS) auction in 2022. Phase 2 was awarded under RESS 4 in 2024. Combined, the two phases will provide 99MW of solar capacity, positioning Drombeg among Ireland’s largest solar installations.
ESB has also recently commissioned a 108MW solar plant in County Kildare, developed through a joint venture with Bord na Mona, a semi-state-owned energy company. This project is part of a broader co-development plan targeting up to 500MW of solar capacity across four sites.
The Irish solar sector has seen significant growth, generating more electricity in the first seven months of 2025 than in the entirety of 2024. This increase reflects rising investment and deployment of clean energy assets, creating new opportunities for EPC contractors and investors.
The project further demonstrates private investment confidence in Ireland’s renewable market. Ardian, a global investment firm, recently acquired Energia Group, an Irish energy utility, including its pipeline of wind, solar, and battery energy storage (BESS) projects. Such transactions highlight the growing value of Ireland’s renewable infrastructure for strategic investors.
Greencells’ continued collaboration with ESB reinforces its position in the Irish renewable sector while supporting the government’s clean energy objectives. The Phase 2 extension will strengthen grid supply flexibility and increase renewable penetration, aligning with Ireland’s low-carbon transition targets.
