Energy Dome and Google have signed their first bilateral commercial agreement to deploy a 23MW/200MWh CO2 Battery project in County Offaly. The development is intended to provide long-duration storage capacity, relieve network constraints and support access to round-the-clock carbon-free electricity in Ireland.
Business Wire announced that the project forms part of a long-term partnership established by the companies in 2025 to scale Energy Dome's CO2 Battery technology and broaden access to affordable, secure and continuously available clean power. The announcement follows a separate 19MW/200MWh project in Arizona unveiled earlier this month with utility company SRP.
Energy Dome will develop, own and operate the Offaly facility using its proprietary CO2 Battery technology. The system stores energy by compressing carbon dioxide using electricity from the grid and later expands the gas through a turbine to generate electricity for dispatch back to the network.
The project is located near Rhode in County Offaly on the site of a former peat-fired thermal power station. Developed alongside Midlands-based developer Lumcloon Energy, the installation is positioned close to high-voltage transmission infrastructure serving the Greater Dublin area.
According to the companies, the site sits within an area containing significant solar and wind resources that experience curtailment because of congestion on the local network. The storage facility is intended to absorb surplus electricity during periods of oversupply and release it when demand increases, reducing congestion and limiting the need for additional transmission infrastructure.
Claudio Spadacini, founder and chief executive officer of Energy Dome, said: "We are proud to work with Google on a project that strengthens grid resilience and unlocks the path to 24/7 carbon-free energy in Ireland."
He added: "This project is the first commercial bilateral deployment under the strategic partnership between our companies, which aims to develop CO2 Battery projects across Europe, North America and Asia-Pacific."
Vanessa Hartley, head of Google Ireland, said: "At Google, we are committed to catalysing next-generation energy technologies to bolster grid resilience and introduce critical storage capacity to the system."
She added: "This milestone is a next step in our long-term partnership with Energy Dome, and will help scale their promising long-duration energy storage technology, charging ahead to an affordable, secure and clean energy future."
