Bord na Móna has officially opened the €150 million Derrinlough Wind Farm in Co Offaly, a 21-turbine project with a combined capacity of 126 MW that sits on the Clongawny and Drinagh bogs and is underpinned by a corporate power purchase agreement with Amazon Web Services. The CPPA represents part of Amazon's 800 MW renewable energy commitment in Ireland, with the Derrinlough project accounting for 126 MW of that total.
RTÉ reported that under the corporate power purchase agreement, Amazon Web Services is paying for the equivalent amount of power the wind farm generates, while the physical electricity flows into the national grid and is made available to domestic and industrial customers across Ireland.
John Reilly, head of renewable energy at Bord na Móna, said all of the power from the wind farm contributes towards Ireland's European and international renewable energy targets, and that Amazon is underpinning the investment in the site through the corporate power purchase agreement. He added that Bord na Móna will be looking at more similar agreements in future.
The project arrives as Ireland's energy regulator, the Commission for Regulation of Utilities, requires that new data centres supply as much electricity to the grid as they use, with 80 per cent of that electricity required to come from renewable sources. Data centres accounted for over 20 per cent of Ireland's electricity usage in 2024 and are estimated to account for a third of demand by 2030.
Minister for Climate, Energy and the Environment Darragh O'Brien said the Derrinlough Wind Farm will play a vital role in helping Ireland towards its climate targets.
